Shape Of The Impact

Cyanotype on semi-transparent paper
2017

Two billion years ago, a meteor the size of a mountain collided with the earth. It hit just south of Johannesburg, near present-day Parys. The intense impact formed a massive crater, rippling the earth for miles in all directions.

This is the Vredefort Dome - the largest visible crater in the world. It cannot be recognised when one is standing on the ground; only from the air can the entirety of the crater be discerned.

In “Shape Of The Impact”, the crater is depicted through a cyanotype - a photographic print made using the sun. Light rays arriving on earth echo the movement of the meteor, from deep space into our atmosphere, sky, and ground.
