PinPoint
2008
Stop Motion Animation
PinPoint negotiates the relationship between the plotting of a space (as a map, a graph or an aerial photograph) and the physical, multi-dimensional location it represents. In the first animation, many pointing fingers place themselves and their understanding of a city (Paris) on an aerial map. The gesture of pointing is an expression of personal confidence and agency in an environment, and a referential pinpointing in a greater context or narrative. In the second piece, maps of Paris slowly build from a line or marking into intricate details of the city. The maps are referenced from historic, geographic, diagrammatic and tourism maps of the famous city. This brings attention to certain aspects of the cities landscape, and to the varied reasons for mapping. The maps are hand drawn and so they take on a personal, sometimes inaccurate quality – suggesting the subjectivity and individuality that exists in each maps conception, however precise the cartographic measurements claim to be.
